De Oosthal as a cultural setting for workshops & rehearsals

A place that gives focus and energy

In De Oosthal, one works in an environment with history: industrial heritage, maritime context and museum pieces on the edges of the space. This gives workshops and rehearsals a distinct “frame”: serious enough for concentration, inspiring enough to spark creativity and play.

  • Inspiring foundation: little needed to “turn on” the space.
  • Peace of mind: open hallway that remains uncluttered, even with movement.
  • Cultural credibility: setting fits art, performance and making processes.

Freely assignable to your work format

De Oosthal is fundamentally one large, open space. This allows the setup to be completely tailored to your form of work: circle, floor work, stations, rehearsal surface or combinations.

What you can control (and what we think about)

  • Floor plan: space for movement, props and safe running lines.
  • Technology: basic audio, microphones or projection as needed.
  • Crewhub/storage: practical place for materials, costumes or cases.

Location

De Oosthal is situated on the Nieuwe Vaart in Amsterdam East, right on the water’s edge, and also borders the Westhal shipyard. Historically, this area has been a major centre for shipbuilding and the maritime industry in Amsterdam.

Thanks to our central location by the water, we can also arrange boat transfers for your event guests.

Space

  • Approx. 250 m² net floor area, as one large, open-plan space
  • Approx. 470 m² gross floor area, including maritime exhibitions (historic ship engines)
  • Centrale entree met grote ontvangstruimte en toiletten
  • Maximum 200 seats (theatre-style seating)
  • Maximum 250 people (standing)

Maritime culture & history as an integral part of the experience

De Oosthal is located in and next to Museum ‘t Kromhout. During workshops and rehearsals, that heritage is primarily a silent “frame”: the place provides focus and meaning, without guiding your working form. A short context sentence in the welcome or a route along the museum pieces is often enough to make that cultural layer visible.

Adjusted rate for cultural bodies

Cultural organizations (such as museums, music organizations and foundations) can take advantage of a modified rate.

Boat transfer option

The waterfront event can already begin on the boat

Boat transfers can be used as a quiet start or finish: arriving together, landing and setting the tone, or just relaxed sailing out afterwards. This can be done for the whole group or selectively.

It could work as follows:

  • We will coordinate a central boarding location and sailing time to fit your schedule.
  • A reception moment (welcome, drinks, short briefing) may take place on board.
  • Afterwards, a return cruise can also be arranged, if desired.

Boat transfer is optional: you can also use De Oosthal without a boat, or just for a select group (VIP/press/speaker team).
