Informal meeting among maritime heritage

De Oosthal as a cultural setting for receptions & drinks

A setting that starts conversations

A reception or get-together is all about meeting. De Oosthal naturally helps with that: you are in a raw-industrial space with museum exhibits and maritime history as silent “conversation starters,” so guests mingle faster and the atmosphere immediately feels special.

  • Strong base atmosphere: less reliance on styling to make “impact.”
  • Different subgroups: guests can naturally cluster (network, relationships, team) without it feeling fragmented.
  • Photogenic setting: ideal for reception photos and branding moments without a “trade show look.

Hospitality and transit

Where many get-togethers break down with queues and crowds, De Oosthal offers peace and order above all. You keep the space open, place bar/dispensing points and hospitality where it makes sense, creating a natural flow in which guests move freely – with room for a short toast or welcome speech, without the get-together grinding to a halt.

  • Flow: logical routing + distribution of bar/dispensing points to avoid queues.
  • Guest experience: welcome, checkroom, host points and “rest areas” without traffic bottlenecks.
  • Brief moments: toast/award/welcome speech can be done without “room setup” or hard stop.

Location

De Oosthal is situated on the Nieuwe Vaart in Amsterdam East, right on the water’s edge, and also borders the Westhal shipyard. Historically, this area has been a major centre for shipbuilding and the maritime industry in Amsterdam.

Thanks to our central location by the water, we can also arrange boat transfers for your event guests.

Space

  • Approx. 250 m² net floor area, as one large, open-plan space
  • Approx. 470 m² gross floor area, including maritime exhibitions (historic ship engines)
  • Centrale entree met grote ontvangstruimte en toiletten
  • Maximum 200 seats (theatre-style seating)
  • Maximum 250 people (standing)

Maritime culture & history as an integral part of the experience

De Oosthal is part of the Kromhout shipyard and is located in and next to Museum ‘t Kromhout. During a reception or drinks party, that heritage is not a “theme,” but the background that carries the atmosphere: guests are literally standing between maritime history and museum exhibits. A short contextual sentence in the welcome or subtle signing is often enough to make that cultural layer visible.

Adjusted rate for cultural bodies

Cultural organizations (such as museums, music organizations and foundations) can take advantage of a modified rate.

Boat transfer option

The waterfront event can already begin on the boat

A reception or drinks reception lends itself perfectly to a boat transfer: the cruise is a relaxed start where guests already land, network and set the tone. Upon arrival, guests immediately step into the maritime-cultural setting of De Oosthal.

It could work as follows:

  • We will coordinate a central boarding location and sailing time to fit your schedule.
  • A reception moment (welcome, drinks, short briefing) may take place on board.
  • Afterwards, a return cruise can also be arranged, if desired.

Boat transfer is optional: you can also use De Oosthal without a boat, or just for a select group (VIP/press/speaker team).
