Live experience between heritage and manufacturing

De Oosthal as a cultural setting for concerts & performances

A stage with an authentic setting

De Oosthal feels like culture even before a note sounds: industrial architecture, maritime history and museum pieces that give the space character. This gives a concert or performance its own identity – not “a hall,” but a place where heritage and performance reinforce each other.

Why this works nicely for programmers and producers

  • Cultural credibility: setting aligns with music, theater and cultural programming.
  • Photogenic and distinctive: ideal for promo, press and audience experience.
  • Flexible audience concept: standing, seated or hybrid to suit genre and flow.

Flow for audience, crew and technique

Live events require clear routing and practical choices: entrance, backstage/crew, technology, audience flow and a logical bar/pause flow. De Oosthal is one open space, allowing you to build the show around sightlines and technique while keeping the rest of the program (walk-in, break, walk-out) running smoothly.

What you can steer on:

  • Sightlines & setup: theater, flat floor, in-the-round or hybrid.
  • Technology: audio, lighting and any projection tailored to the space.
  • Audience flow: entrance, break and exit without bottlenecks.

Location

De Oosthal is situated on the Nieuwe Vaart in Amsterdam East, right on the water’s edge, and also borders the Westhal shipyard. Historically, this area has been a major centre for shipbuilding and the maritime industry in Amsterdam.

Thanks to our central location by the water, we can also arrange boat transfers for your event guests.

Space

  • Approx. 250 m² net floor area, as one large, open-plan space
  • Approx. 470 m² gross floor area, including maritime exhibitions (historic ship engines)
  • Centrale entree met grote ontvangstruimte en toiletten
  • Maximum 200 seats (theatre-style seating)
  • Maximum 250 people (standing)

Maritime culture & history as an integral part of the experience

De Oosthal is located in and next to Museum ‘t Kromhout. For concerts and performances that means: audiences and performers literally stand between maritime heritage and Amsterdam’s manufacturing industry. A short contextual phrase in the programming or a subtle reference in spoken intro/signing is often enough to make that cultural layer visible, without distracting from the performance.

Adjusted rate for cultural bodies

Cultural organizations (such as museums, music organizations and foundations) can take advantage of a modified rate.

Boat transfer option

The waterfront event can already begin on the boat

Boat transfers can be part of the overall experience: an arrival by water that suits Amsterdam and the maritime setting. This can be used for the public, but also selectively for artists, crew or VIPs.

It could work as follows:

  • We will coordinate a central boarding location and sailing time to fit your schedule.
  • A reception moment (welcome, drinks, short briefing) may take place on board.
  • Afterwards, a return cruise can also be arranged, if desired.

Boat transfer is optional: you can also use De Oosthal without a boat, or just for a select group (VIP/press/speaker team).
