De Oosthal as a cultural setting for pop-ups

A pop-up that feels instantly 'real'

De Oosthal has a distinct foundation: industrial heritage, maritime history and museum exhibits as a tangible context. As a result, a pop-up feels less temporary and more like a destination – ideal for concepts that want to combine experience, curiosity and walk-throughs.

  • Authentic context: heritage gives substance and credibility to your concept.
  • Photogenic & shareable: strong for PR, social and branding.
  • Broadly applicable: from brand activation to design/showroom, community or cultural pop-up.

Freedom in routing and zones

De Oosthal is one large, open space. That makes it easy to place routing, booths, activations and hospitality exactly how it works for your flow of visitors.

What you can steer on:

  • Visitor flow: entrance → route → highlights → exit, without bottlenecks.
  • Lines of sight: how do key zones and activations remain visible and attractive?
  • Set-up and take-down: planning, supply and safety appropriate to the venue and museum environment.

Location

De Oosthal is situated on the Nieuwe Vaart in Amsterdam East, right on the water’s edge, and also borders the Westhal shipyard. Historically, this area has been a major centre for shipbuilding and the maritime industry in Amsterdam.

Thanks to our central location by the water, we can also arrange boat transfers for your event guests.

Space

  • Approx. 250 m² net floor area, as one large, open-plan space
  • Approx. 470 m² gross floor area, including maritime exhibitions (historic ship engines)
  • Centrale entree met grote ontvangstruimte en toiletten
  • Maximum 200 seats (theatre-style seating)
  • Maximum 250 people (standing)

Maritime culture & history as an integral part of the experience

De Oosthal is part of the Kromhout shipyard and is located in and next to Museum ‘t Kromhout. That heritage gives a pop-up immediate context: your concept lands in a place with history, materials and museum pieces that give the space character. With a short welcome text, subtle signing or a route along the museum pieces, you make that cultural layer visible, while your idea remains guiding.

Adjusted rate for cultural bodies

Cultural organizations (such as museums, music organizations and foundations) can take advantage of a modified rate.

Boat transfer option

The waterfront event can already begin on the boat

Boat transfers can make a pop-up extra distinctive: an arrival by water that suits Amsterdam and the maritime setting. This can be done for the public, but also selectively for VIPs, press or partners.

It could work as follows:

  • We will coordinate a central boarding location and sailing time to fit your schedule.
  • A reception moment (welcome, drinks, short briefing) may take place on board.
  • Afterwards, a return cruise can also be arranged, if desired.

Boat transfer is optional: you can also use De Oosthal without a boat, or just for a select group (VIP/press/speaker team).

Frequently Asked Questions

How big is the space and is it one open hall?

De Oosthal is about 250 m² net (about 470 m² gross) and is basically one large, open space. This gives a lot of freedom in routing, zones and activations.

As a guideline, max. 250 people standing and max. 200 seated (theater setup). The achievable capacity for your pop-up depends on routing, booths/objects and safety space.

The floor plan shows such things as restrooms (MIVA + ladies/men), a pantry/facilities and clear entry/exit and emergency exits. This helps position hospitality and visitor flow quickly.

There is a front room (approx. 192 sqm gross) which depending on filling can be useful for reception, crew, storage or an additional area. We will tailor this to your concept.

Yes, provided it is clear in advance what is coming in (booths/objects, AV, any hanging) and when. Then we plan a practical route and time slot, appropriate within safety and museum environment.
