De Oosthal as a cultural setting for lectures & seminars

A substantive setting with 'attention' by itself

De Oosthal gives lectures and seminars a quiet, serious base with a clear cultural layer: heritage, maritime history and museum exhibits as context. As a result, a meeting feels less “hall” and more “venue,” while the content remains central.

  • Strong focus: open space remains uncluttered with tight arrangement.
  • Cultural framing: setting suits knowledge sharing, debate and deepening.
  • Experience without distraction: heritage as background, not noise.

Customized room concept (arrangement, sightlines, technology)

De Oosthal is one large, open space. This allows the setup to be tailored to your format: theater, cabaret, panel, or a hybrid setup with reception and networking.

What you can steer on:

  • Technology: audio, microphones, projection and lighting matched to the space.
  • Audience flow: reception, break and exit without bottlenecks.
  • Crew & logistics: practical place for direction, speakers and materials.

Location

De Oosthal is situated on the Nieuwe Vaart in Amsterdam East, right on the water’s edge, and also borders the Westhal shipyard. Historically, this area has been a major centre for shipbuilding and the maritime industry in Amsterdam.

Thanks to our central location by the water, we can also arrange boat transfers for your event guests.

Space

  • Approx. 250 m² net floor area, as one large, open-plan space
  • Approx. 470 m² gross floor area, including maritime exhibitions (historic ship engines)
  • Centrale entree met grote ontvangstruimte en toiletten
  • Maximum 200 seats (theatre-style seating)
  • Maximum 250 people (standing)

Maritime culture & history as an integral part of the experience

De Oosthal is located in and next to Museum ‘t Kromhout. For lectures and seminars, this provides a cultural context that supports the content: you receive guests in a place where maritime history and Amsterdam’s manufacturing industry are visible in the space. With one short contextual sentence in the welcome, the content remains central, while the location does add meaning.

Adjusted rate for cultural bodies

Cultural organizations (such as museums, music organizations and foundations) can take advantage of a modified rate.

Boat transfer option

The waterfront event can already begin on the boat

Boat transfers can give a seminar or lecture extra “landing”: guests arrive together, and the reception moment begins relaxed on the water. This can be done for the entire group or selectively.

It could work as follows:

  • We will coordinate a central boarding location and sailing time to fit your schedule.
  • A reception moment (welcome, drinks, short briefing) may take place on board.
  • Afterwards, a return cruise can also be arranged, if desired.

Boat transfer is optional: you can also use De Oosthal without a boat, or just for a select group (VIP/press/speaker team).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum capacity for a lecture/seminar?

As a guideline, max. 200 seats (theater seating arrangement). The achievable capacity depends on setup, technology and sightlines.

Yes. De Oosthal is basically one large, open hall with museum exhibits along the edges. As a result, there is a lot of freedom in arrangement and routing.

The floor plan shows such things as restrooms (MIVA + ladies/gents), pantry/facilities and clear entry/exit and emergency exits. This helps in planning reception, break and flow.

There is a front room (about 192 sq. ft. gross) that can be used by agreement for reception, speaker space, crew or an additional area.

Yes. Please share your requirements (microphones, projection, lighting) or your AV partner, and we will tailor it to the space.
