Peace, space and meaning

De Oosthal as a cultural setting for a dignified farewell

An environment appropriate to the moment

De Oosthal is not a standard funeral venue, but a place with a quiet, historic atmosphere. The maritime context and heritage in and around the hall give the farewell a natural layering, without feeling heavy or “staged.

  • Dignified peace: open space that can be arranged soberly and respectfully.
  • Meaningful context: history and heritage as quiet background.
  • Space for togetherness: place for ceremony and meeting afterwards.

Clear flow for ceremony and togetherness

A farewell requires overview and gentle transitions: arrival, seating arrangement, speakers/music and then space to meet. De Oosthal is one open space, allowing for calm and logical arrangement and routing.

What you can steer on:

  • Audio & music: microphone, music and possibly projection by arrangement.
  • Reception & walk-out: space for condolences and fellowship afterwards.
  • Logistics: build-up/drop-down and timing appropriate to the moment.

Location

De Oosthal is situated on the Nieuwe Vaart in Amsterdam East, right on the water’s edge, and also borders the Westhal shipyard. Historically, this area has been a major centre for shipbuilding and the maritime industry in Amsterdam.

Thanks to our central location by the water, we can also arrange boat transfers for your event guests.

Space

  • Approx. 250 m² net floor area, as one large, open-plan space
  • Approx. 470 m² gross floor area, including maritime exhibitions (historic ship engines)
  • Centrale entree met grote ontvangstruimte en toiletten
  • Maximum 200 seats (theatre-style seating)
  • Maximum 250 people (standing)

Maritime culture & history as an integral part of the experience

De Oosthal is located in and next to Museum ‘t Kromhout. At a commemoration, that context is primarily a quiet, meaningful background: the shipyard history and heritage are palpably present, without “coloring” the moment. A short contextual sentence in the welcome can signify the place; otherwise, the farewell always remains leading.

Adjusted rate for cultural bodies

Cultural organizations (such as museums, music organizations and foundations) can take advantage of a modified rate.

Boat transfer option

The waterfront event can already begin on the boat

If appropriate and desired, boat transfers can contribute to a quiet arrival, for example for a select group. We always coordinate this in consultation.

It could work as follows:

  • We will coordinate a central boarding location and sailing time to fit your schedule.
  • A reception moment (welcome, drinks, short briefing) may take place on board.
  • Afterwards, a return cruise can also be arranged, if desired.

Boat transfer is optional: you can also use De Oosthal without a boat, or just for a select group (VIP/press/speaker team).
