De Oosthal as a cultural setting for exhibitions & presentations

De Oosthal is basically one large, open space surrounded by historical museum exhibits. This presents the opportunity to arrange the hall freely to your concept, from tight product launches to an exhibition with walking route.

An exhibition that automatically has "context"

De Oosthal feels like a location with a story: industrial heritage, maritime history and the atmosphere of the Kromhout shipyard.

This automatically gives an art exhibition or cultural presentation layers-as if the work is not just “hanging,” but in dialogue with the place.

The museum decor at the edges makes the setting tangible, without ever having to become decorative or commercial.

One open space that you curate as a route

De Oosthal is fundamentally one large, open hall surrounded by historic museum pieces. This allows the space to be curated the way you want it: with sightlines, resting points and a natural walking route along works, installations or thematic zones. An opening, talk or short introduction fits in effortlessly, without interrupting the flow of the exhibition.

In practice, for example, this could play out like this:

  • Entrance & reception with a clear starting point (check-in, checkroom, welcome drink)
  • Curated walking route along works/stands with logical chapters or themes, with space for rest and conversation points
  • Short talk + closing/ drinks at a fixed spot with good sightlines, after which guests are free to move back past highlights

Location

De Oosthal is situated on the Nieuwe Vaart in Amsterdam East, right on the water’s edge, and also borders the Westhal shipyard. Historically, this area has been a major centre for shipbuilding and the maritime industry in Amsterdam.

Thanks to our central location by the water, we can also arrange boat transfers for your event guests.

Space

  • Approx. 250 m² net floor area, as one large, open-plan space
  • Approx. 470 m² gross floor area, including maritime exhibitions (historic ship engines)
  • Centrale entree met grote ontvangstruimte en toiletten
  • Maximum 200 seats (theatre-style seating)
  • Maximum 250 people (standing)

Maritime culture & history as an integral part of the experience

De Oosthal is located in and next to Museum ‘t Kromhout and breathes Amsterdam manufacturing industry. As a result, a product presentation or exhibition here automatically acquires a cultural layer: you present among cast-iron trusses and historic, working Kromhout engines. The heritage can be subtly included in your reception, routing or short context sentence – without it having to become a “program.

Adjusted rate for cultural bodies

Cultural organizations (such as museums, music organizations and foundations) can take advantage of a modified rate.

Boat transfer option

The waterfront event can already begin on the boat

The boat transfer is a powerful way to make your event extra distinctive, without making your program in De Oosthal more complex. You can use it as a soft opening (networking on board) or as part of the reveal (with a short intro on the way).

It could work as follows:

  • We will coordinate a central boarding location and sailing time with your schedule.
  • On board, we can facilitate a welcome moment (welcome, brief introduction) if desired.
  • Upon arrival at the Kromhout Wharf, guests disembark and walk directly into the maritime-cultural setting of De Oosthal.

Boat transfer is optional: you can also use De Oosthal without a boat, or just for a select group (VIP/press/speaker team).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is De Oosthal suitable for booths and demo setups?

Yes. Because it is one large, open space, booths and demo setups can usually fit in well. As long as we know in advance what you want to display (dimensions, weight, power/AV, safety space, set-up and take-down). Based on that, we recommend a routing and layout that feels logical to visitors.

Yes, and it also fits the positioning of De Oosthal. Think of a short heritage intro, a mini tour ‘in the edges’ of the museum, or collaboration with a cultural party. Describe your idea (or goal), and we will think with you in a form that does not come at the expense of your program.

Yes. Boat transfer is optional and can also be used selectively (e.g., only for VIPs/press/speakers).

Yes. Set-up and take-down is well organized, provided we know in advance what is coming in and when (bus/small transport, pallets, large objects, height/weight, lifting equipment). Then we plan a practical time slot and route so that it fits within museum environment, safety and the program.

Yes. Temporary branding and decorating is usually possible, as long as it is safe and the heritage and museum exhibits remain protected. Please share your plan (materials, mounting, projection points, possible smoke/haze), and we will advise what can be done and what alternatives work best.
