Hence the expression &#8220;lying in front of Pampus.<br>From 1887 to 1895, the fortress island of Pampus was built on the sandbar. It had to guard the entrance to Amsterdam across the then Zuiderzee. From Pampus alone, no shot was ever fired. Over the years, the island fell into disrepair; what remained was a maze of corridors and halls. But in 1991, Pampus became open to the public again.
